Lattice Cityv2

Lines and particles, two minutes, one loop

The second take on Lattice City, drawn only with lines and points of light. A city begins as one route through a grid, becomes a network, a current, a skyline, and finally a single point in a larger lattice — the grid it started from. Every frame is computed in your browser as it plays; the score is code, cut to the same bars.

Inventory

Nothing on screen has a surface. This is everything the film is made of, counted from the same code that draws it.

Points of light
163,180Every particle in the film, in six sets.
Lines
20,080Each one a strip two pixels wider than itself, for a soft edge.
Grid cells
4,09664 × 64. The same points become the cube and, at the end, the larger lattice.

1,909Edges drawn as the search floods the streets, one step at a time.
Woven routes
1,023Manhattan paths through a cube of 16³ points, launched on the beat.
Infinite lattice

Notes

Only light

Nothing on screen has a surface. Every tower is twelve edges, a ring of lines at each floor and a grid of points for windows; every street is a line; every packet of traffic is a point. They are all added together as light, so a crowded view gets brighter instead of darker, and depth is only haze and focus.

A real route

The first grid has holes where blocks of the city will stand. A breadth-first search leaves the centre and floods the streets one step at a time; when it reaches the far corner, the shortest path is traced back. Those holes later become the towers, and that path becomes the main street the camera flies along.

Particles that keep their place

The same 4,096 points are the first grid, the cube and the lattice. They morph between formations, each on its own delay, so a change of shape reads as a movement rather than a cut.

Two takes

The first Lattice City is ray-marched: solid beams, crystal districts, impact. This one is its opposite: no solids, a thin typeface, and a story that ends where it began. Both are cut to a score written as code on the same kind of bar grid.
